Sizes, weights and hooks: how to read our charts
The first two charts convert measurements. The third helps you choose a hook size for your lure’s length when using a drop shot rig.
1 and 2. Convert a measurement
Find the value you know in one column, then read its equivalent on the same row. You can use these charts in either direction.
Chart 01 · Conversion
From ounces to grams
Understand the weight shown on a sinker, jig head or lure.
| Ounces (oz) | Grams (g) |
|---|---|
| 1/32 | 0.9 |
| 3/32 | 2.7 |
| 1/8 | 3.5 |
| 1/4 | 7.1 |
| 3/8 | 10.6 |
| 1/2 | 14.2 |
| 5/8 | 17.7 |
| 3/4 | 21.3 |
| 1 | 28.3 |
| 2 | 56.7 |
Example: a 1/4 oz jig head weighs about 7.1 g.
Chart 02 · Conversion
From inches to centimetres
Get a clearer idea of the length shown on a lure.
| Inches (in) | Centimetres (cm) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2.54 |
| 2 | 5.08 |
| 2.5 | 6.35 |
| 3 | 7.62 |
| 3.5 | 8.89 |
| 4 | 10.16 |
| 5 | 12.7 |
| 6 | 15.24 |
| 7 | 17.78 |
| 8 | 20.32 |
Example: a 3 in lure measures 7.62 cm.
Chart 03 · Choosing a hook
Match the hook to your lure
For a drop shot rig, find your lure’s length on the left. The right-hand column suggests a hook size to use as a starting point.
| Lure length | Drop shot hook |
|---|---|
| 2 in | #6 |
| 2.5 in | #4 |
| 3 in | #2 |
| 3.5 in | #1 |
| 4 in | 1/0 |
| 4.5 in | 2/0 |
These pairings are guidelines: lure shape and thickness, as well as the hook model, may call for an adjustment. This guide applies to drop shot rigs; other rigs may need different hook sizes.
For the complete rig: find line and sinker recommendations, plus the rigging steps, in our drop shot guide.
